Scratch 1: Game Design (Week of July 13th)

Campers will use Scratch to creating their own games! In Scratch 1, campers will learn to program games that take place Under the Sea and In Space. They will learn how to make games to avoid obstacles and capture objects for points. Campers will learn sequences, looping, events and cloning. They will, also, learn how to make Sprites move randomly and under user control.

Scratch is developed by MIT Media Lab and widely adopted by educators worldwide to help children learn creative computing through block-based visual programming.

Instructor

Kari is the academic director and instructor at Build A Robot. She has been a software engineer for over 25 years and now focuses on teaching coding in ways that engage and create delight. She has a BS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a MS in ICTD (Information and Communication Technology for Development) from the University of Colorado in Boulder. She has over 5 years of experience in teaching coding to kids and adults and been an instructor at CU Boulder. The focus of Kari’s Master’s program was creating curriculum and software to make coding and networking more engaging and relevant to middle school girls.


 

Prerequisite

Age: 7~12


No prior coding experience required. Have created a scratch account.

Online Class access information will be emailed one week prior to the start of the class. If materials are involved, materials will be shipped two weeks prior to start of the class.


Technology Requirements:

  1.  Internet access
  2.  Windows PC, Mac, or Chromebook with Webcam, microphone, speaker (or headphone with integrated mic).
  3. Webcam – Either internal (built-in) or external camera
  4. Is parent involvement needed? – Maybe needed at the beginning of the first session depending on the student’s past online learning experience.
